Description

The Rudkhan Castle tour takes you into a sturdy fortress that once provided refuge to Mirza Kuchak Khan Jangali. Discovered by a Polish researcher in 1830 and listed as a national heritage site in 1975, the castle is also known as the “Thousand Steps Castle.” This tour includes a visit to the historic village of Masuleh, offering you a chance to stroll through a town that has preserved its historical architecture. Rudkhan Castle believed to date back to the Sassanid era and early Islamic period, was restored during the Seljuk era and served as a base for the Ismailis and rulers of Gilan. Located near the Rakhun River, it is also known by names such as Hezar Pelleh, Segsar, and Hesami. The castle’s architecture, featuring a citadel for rulers and barracks for soldiers, is a highlight for visitors. The fortress spans 500 meters in length, with 56 towers and walls reaching up to 1500 meters in height. An inscription found at the entrance, now preserved in the Rasht Museum, provides information about the castle’s restoration. The tour also includes a visit to the stepped village of Masuleh, with a history of 800 to 1,000 years and architecture from the Zand dynasty. As the first living historical town in Iran to be registered as a national heritage site, Masuleh enchants visitors with its yellow houses, narrow alleys, and unique atmosphere. Its traditional architecture, friendly locals, and vibrant culture make this village a perfect complement to your visit to Rudkhan Castle.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Rudkhan Castle is during the spring. In this season, the weather is pleasant, and nature unfolds its vibrant greenery before the eyes of domestic tour travelers. Summer, with its heat and humidity, can be a bit uncomfortable for many visitors. However, if you wish to witness the enchanting beauty of autumn surrounding the castle, fall is the perfect time for your visit.
